Momentous Insurance Brokerage to Provide “Make Over” To
Frederick Douglass Academy Charter Middle School
In conjunction with the “Big Sunday” Weekend Projects, fifteen Momentous employees gear up to paint, plant and clean the inner city campus, making the area more beautiful and providing a better learning environment for students.
Van Nuys, CA, April 28, 2010 – Momentous Insurance Brokerage has a rich culture of philanthropy. From small potluck dinners at the local homeless shelter to donating $157,000 to the Burbank Fire Department, the company is actively engaged in giving back to the community.
This weekend, on May 1st, Momentous is participating in the “Big Sunday” event, which is the largest regional community service event in America. Momentous is assembling a team to volunteer their Saturday afternoons to help revitalize Fredrick Douglass Academy’s campus. Since most of the funding is directed to classroom costs, the outdoor areas go neglected. Students currently eat lunch and play outdoors on half of the asphalt parking lot. Momentous will help landscape, install planters for the lunch area and create a safe play space. They’ll also paint some murals around the school.
“I’ve always believed that if you are in a position to give back, then that’s what you do.” Said President Diane Brinson. “The fact that we can do something that is benefiting a child’s learning environment is a wonderful way for us to give and is also an enriching experience for our employees.”
Gwyn Shamlin, the Chairman of the Momentous Insurance “Make it Better Committee” specifically selected this project not only for a chance to help inner city kids, but also because of the “green” component of building a garden.
“I personally believe we need to do our part to take care of our environment, “ said Shamlin. “And planting a garden in place of an asphalt playground will really lift the spirit of the school and hopefully have a positive impact on the students. I also think this opportunity syncs well with our company values on multiple levels.”
By multiple levels, Shamlin is referring to the fact that Momentous’ Make it Better Committee is primarily devoted to helping women and children in need. In addition, Momentous has been operating in a paperless environment for the past 5 years.
